He might have spent years playing a futuristic robot in the "Terminator" blockbusters, but Schwarzenegger has shown himself to be astonishingly politically astute off screen, building a strong profile within the Republican Party and garnering grass-roots support through his work for the Special Olympics and other sports programs.

A year ago, the "Kindergarten Cop" spearheaded a ballot initiative that authorised $550 million (381 million pounds) a year for after-school programs for California kids, tasting victory with the tantalising pledge "I`ll be back" that has become his showbiz, and now his political, signature line.

In 2000, he considered, but decided against, making a run for California governor.

Three years on, Schwarzenegger has more name recognition, more personal wealth -- $30 million alone for the latest "Terminator" installment -- more charisma than any of the other likely candidates vying to unseat the bland Davis, whose popularity has slumped as the state`s budget deficit has mushroomed to a record $38 billion.

He`s spent weeks promoting "Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines" saying neither yes or no as to whether he is planning an abrupt career change.

He took the movie to U.S. troops in Iraq, boosting both military morale and his own popularity, all the time fine-tuning political puns such as "There is no money over there. There`s no leadership, pretty much like California."

I'm with u.

I don't know much about individual state policies, but that speech he gave in Iraq:

'U ppl r the real Terminators'.... Heck - u r supporting the troops, not fuelling the view the rest of the world has

If he is voted in just on his celebrity status - then its a sorry state of affairs.

& if he is voted in just because he is republican regardless of his individual policies.. even sadder!!

& thats the other thing - if he is gonna compare Iraq to California on just a few hours after arriving there.... he should maybe ask himself why California has little or no Electricity / water & appaling sewage conditions....

I just find it amusing that he is a Republican being that most Hollywood types are Democrats, and he is married into an extremely political family that happen to be Democrats.

Anyway, when he runs for President, then we'll talk. :P
