I don't care what the law says or what many people believe. The stronger species is always the one to survive, naturally. Just because they were brought over by us instead of somehow finding their own way means **** all.

I have more respect for the right each creature has to live. Fair enough if someone wants to set up a preservation area and only keep red ones in there to increase the numbers - but short of eradicating every single grey one (which is presumably impossible) if they are more dominant, then eventually they will out-last the red ones anyway.

I think the point is you shouldn't have to set up a conservation area, sure the Grey has a right to live, in its own country. It's those bloody yanks again throwing their weight around.

What about a lizard species were brought to this country and started killing us humans because they were more dominant?

They've been here a long time now, and it isn't their fault that someone brought them over. Besides which, they are presumably descended from the same ancestors anyway, back when the land was all a single mass - so it doesn't matter if they've been here 100 years or 10,000,000.

How do you feel about the fact that we have lions, elephants, zebra, giraffes etc here - none of those are originally from here, right? And those are ones in conservation areas here (safari parks, zoos etc)

If such a species existed then they'd have wiped us out before now anyway Any species which is more dominant than another will naturally survive - if this wasn't the case then we'd not be here. If a species isn't strong enough to survive, and can't adapt, then it means nature has selected it for extinction.

They're not out wiping out the indigenous populations so I'm not bothered :]

Obviously the Grey Squirrel problem is just that; a problem. Otherwise the Wildlife Agencies would just take the same view as you and they would not be classed as vermin.

Perhaps in some areas they are literally over-run with them, but surely that can't be the case everywhere. The park near me isn't huge, but there must be a few dozen of them there and people like to feed them, they are very tame. There are no red ones, only grey - so why should grey ones everywhere be classed as vermin and people be expected to kill them?

That's because your average joe townie has never seen the beauty of a red squirrel and thinks "ooh look isn't it cute!" when it couldn't be further from the truth.

It's not just the damage they do the reds, its the birds, the trees - especially beech trees which by all accounts nearly "died" back in the 20's!

It's a shame that many people have only ever seen Grey Squirrels and therefore don't really know just how evil they are :E
