I went for a walk with my camera this morning, since it was nice out...

Been doing a little bit of origami - with little very much being the operative word...

I got a new camera today - not a replacement for my DSLR, but just a little compact, which is of course easier to carry around. I was surprised how well some of my shots from today have turned out actually...

It even shoots in widescreen

Nice little gadgets, those compact camera's, aren't they Neil? I've got one as well, which I pretty much take everywhere!

Very nice Sara That first one is beautifully done and shows the potential of a good HDR shot. I hate seeing them usually because people overdo them and they seem to glow - the point should be to create a more natural looking shot, just using the bracketed shots to get more detail into the lighter and darker areas than can usually be achieved in a single shot. I was doing some myself yesterday actually, but haven't processed them yet.

Do you use Photoshop to merge them or something else?

I usually use Photomatix, rather than PS. I feel I have much more control over the final result in Photomatix than anything else really. And I don't like those terribly overdone HDR-shots either, especially when they get the glow around the objects! The almost cartoon-like effect I thought looked quite interesting in the beginning, but some people use the trick over and over again... it just gets boring now. I only use HDR these days to get more detail in my shots - and it proves to be especially useful on bright days like we got over here these days!

I've never really used Photomatix, only Photoshop, and have never been satisfied with my results - so maybe I'll give Photomatix a go

These are about the best I've managed in Photoshop - which, as you can see, isn't too good...

HDR = High Dynamic Range, as it is in video games?

That's what it means, yes, but I have no idea of video games using it - I only imagine that it would increase processing time because you'd effectively be sampling each frame multiple times and then processing and rendering the result.

It does increase processing time - it's usually an option you can turn on in the settings, if you have powerful enough hardware. If you leave it off, you get blooming instead - which simply repeats the lighting to create bright whites and dark blacks. Crude, compared to full HDR.
