Yeah... I like to take nightshots as well, but I just put my camera on a pile of clothes, pillows, a wall, a rock, whatever's there - it always worked for me. And the very few panoramas I take, I always take them handheld. I just don't like dragging a tripod along everywhere I go .

With the image stabilizer I should be able to go down to shutterspeeds as low as 1/4, handheld... theoretically. Enough for low light shots anyway. Got to test that this week .

My old tripod folds up to about 30cm and the new one is less than 50cm, and they are both very lightweight, I don't mind having them. The smaller one fits in my normal bag, and the new one has a shoulder strap anyway.

I've found that I can get much better panoramics using one because if the camera is kept level enough, when you join them they are usually much more straight so you don't lose a lot in cropping. Also you have the extra control for taking night shots (not relying just on the angle of the wall etc ) and the extra stability, which helps if you are using a long zoom too.

Obviously though to each his/her own

Doensn't look very much like autumn here yet either. It's been way too warm! But these mushrooms didn't seem to care. The trees are still very green though apart from a few leaves that came down...

Same here, as you can see from that shot, still a lot of green. The park near here is very nice in autumn, last year I was only really getting into taking photo's so didn't get a lot of good ones I think. Just wish I could afford the EOS 350D but it could be a year before I can get one, probably be able to get the 400D by then actually as it would have dropped in price a bit then.
