There's nothing to stop you getting a good photo on a compact camera, it's just about knowing what you're doing. You could get an SLR and end up with shit photos. Having an SLR doesn't make every photo you take instantly amazing, it is just a more sophisticated tool to allow you to capture something as you want it, not just as the camera 'thinks' you might want it.
