did that too, but again, it plays all distorted, not like it should.

Is simply copy protection the same as needing a license code?

I can download all tracks, no problem - however they don't play right - they are distorted. Unless the actual license code is attached to the file (may not be technically correct but that is how I envision it in my head), it will not play correctly.
I have no idea about licence code, I haven't come across anything that requires such code. If I rip something off my cds, only thing to bypass is the copy protection. If the licence crap comes with your player, I'd suggest u to dump such sh1tty player and try to find something bit more flexible. I'd imagine that if u manage to convert whatever to mp3 successfully it should play just fine, as long as u do ripping/converting "unofficially".

I have a feeling that Ice might be more up-to-date with these issues, that was just my two cents about it.

the license crap comes with the CD. When I plop it in, it does all sorts of stuff, one is getting a license code off some website and attaches it - without that ****er it sounds distorted.

Until you delete whatever crap that autoplay installed on your hard drive it will play distorted. Did you search for the file SbcpHid and delete it? It may be a different file or type of copy protection with your cd than with the Velvet Revolver cd also. What's the name of the cd and the band? Perhaps I can find out some more info about it.

It's not illegal, you already own the songs.

And I'm getting the feeling you haven't even tried ripping the CD, but you're trying to use some sort of Digital Rights Management thing to listen to the tracks. Forget that, just rip the CD.

I did - I downloaded the cdex and ripped it that way. It still plays distorted.

I also deleted the thing Kathleen mentioned, restarted the computer and it still plays funny.

It is the VR cd, btw, Kathleen.

Hmm - once I deleted the SbcpHid file I ripped the cd with my usual software - I use Exact Audio Copy but anything should work. I ripped it to wav files for my son so he could have it on his computer and then he ripped it to mp3 for his iPod. Neither of us had any trouble playing it once it was ripped. I know the distortion that you mean - that was what tipped me off to finding a way around it.

WOW!! Finally!!!

I followed that post of Kathleens to the letter and it just didn't seem to work. Then, I checked that second link in her post and I figured out that I only disabled the driver - which was pointless because I deleted the driver later anyway. Then I actually disabled autorun, then I ripped the tracks and now they play fine.

whew!!!

Thanks to all for your awesome help!!!!

I got Springsteens Born To Run today on CD (have on vinyl, saw the cd on sale so bought it) and it mentions no copy protection, but it won't play on my new drive.

It plays on the old one (which won't play music properly due to a problem with the onboard sound) but on the new drive it won't even spin up, it just makes a weird clicking noise.

I'm going to try the information given above for the one copy protected disc I have (Star Wars Episode II OST) which I did manage to play on my other pc but not here.

...and Kathleen what software was it you once mentioned in regards to playing SACD on PC? I heard that Sony plan to release a consumer PC which will be able to decode DSD but as far as I know there is no software available to decode the DSD currently, and it is only possible to play the PCM layer from the hybrid discs.
