Public vs Private schools: your expierences

Just as a follow up to the private education thread.

This isn't what you think is better. it's what you attended and how much you enjoyed or hated it.

I couldn;t help but notice maria and panama (who went to private schools) said it was a horrible experience whereas from my own experience, an absolute dive of a school was brilliant.

so what's your experience been because in my opinion, there's more that goes into how well a kid does in school than how well it does in league tables.

went to private school in elementary and didnt really like it

middle school was public, and now im in high school (public) and i like it a lot better than elementary

a lot more people and more courses you can take instead of just math, science, english, and stuff like that

I went to public school and loved it, met all kinds of people and imo got a much more general, open-minded and better(read unbiased) education than I would have in a private school.

I went to public most of the time, it was just bad most of the time

I went to private college (french collège) and i had a great time, at the end they couldn't kept me but i had two very good friends there and as they never had young people like us they didn't know what to do :P It took them a bit of time to find out what should calm us, in public they knew what to do in the next second (three hours of maths on sat morning and if i wanted to escape, it was during a month as example ) so when they started to be strict in private too, i started to act badly again and they said good bye

Honestly, i'm not traumatized by private - even if did a lot of things which were not allowed i worked well, my results were always good. And it's maybe the best years of school i had

there is not a lot of difference between public school and private school so im confoosed.


do u mean public as in proper public or a normal comprehensive?

public as in you pay a fortune in taxes to go to as opposed to paying a fortune out of your personal bank account to go to

I went to public schools and hated most of them (the last one was a little better, but still not good). I would send my kids to a private school. my sister is attending one and shes loving it

i went to 2 state (public) schools from the age of 4 to 12, and then from 12 to now ive been in 1 private school.
ive liked and hated both public and private, but for different things.
the private school im at has better education generally, except for maths which theyre a bit crap at teaching, but they teach everything else well. the only problem is the rich ppl here are mean (they dont do stuff like give money to charity) and a few are really stuck-up. when i started here i found that in general ppl were friendly to each other but really unfriendly to new ppl. if you want to fit in, you need to start when youre really young - if you start late, like i did, then it will take years for some ppl to accept you. once youre accepted, its great, its like a big family... the only prob is u have to wait for ages for that feeling!
the public schools were friendlier to new ppl and it took quicker for ppl to settle down and fit in, but there wasnt so much family feeling. the PE lessons at my first school were virtually non-existent (in one year i had about 2 PE lessons per year) and at my second school they were absolute hell - there was this huuuuge field that they made you run around nonstop, even if u were asthmatic, and if u took short-cuts like cutting corners, you were made to run around it properly 4 times for each corner u cut. generally the PE lessons at my private school were better - a good compromise between the not-enough-PE of my 1st public school and the too-much-PE of my 2nd public school - the only problem with PE here is that at first no one would have me on their team for any sport cos i was new and it takes ages for new ppl to be accepted.
what i hated about all the schools ive been to is the bullying and how little teachers do about it. at the public schools it was mostly physical bullying and at private school it was mostly verbal and psychological, and a lot of body-language stuff like ignoring people. again the attitude to new ppl sucks - the ppl who have been here ages used to ignore new ppl like they didnt exist.
now im 18 and every1 in my year group is 17 or 18 now and theyre a lot nicer now.

a state school is not a public school.

im actually quite suprised to read that. new ppl were always made a fuss over- well by the majority, it even went as far as being sickly ho ho ho.

yeah i know it seems weird that ppl were really unfriendly to new kids, but its true. i dunno if its private schools in general or if its just my school.
i remember on my first day, i was put with a girl i vaguely knew from my first school, and she was supposed to show me around and introduce me to ppl, and she didnt - most of the time she just ignored me or abandoned me to go off with her friends instead. the teachers didnt do much to help - they assumed that she would help me. there was also a girl who was her friend and was always doing stuff like giving me the wrong directions on purpose so that id get lost, or telling me the wrong school rules to make me do something that was against the rules and get me in trouble. for some strange reason, ppl in my class - especially the girls - hated new kids and liked to play pranks on them. one day i was half an hour late for a lesson cos i had to go to a classroom in a part of the school that i didnt know and the rest of my class ran off there and left me behind, and i couldnt find them so i wandered around trying to find them, and in the end i found a teacher and a bunch of older kids and they took me to the right classroom, and when i got there the class just laughed at me and called me a retard. they were the retards - getting lost in an unfamiliar place doesnt mean youre retarded.
about a year after i started, there was a new boy in the class, and all the class ignored him, so i talked to him, was nice to him and helped him find my way around the school etc - basically the stuff that they didnt do to me - and when they saw us they said stuff like "youre only hanging around with him cos you fancy him". i didnt fancy him, i was just being polite to him.
then last year there was a new girl. when i met her she was in the middle of a crowd of ppl, looking completely lost, and all the crowd was ignoring her, so i talked to her, introduced myself, that sort of thing. i couldnt believe people were STILL ignoring new kids as they were all 16 at the time - old enough to know some manners!
like i said maybe its just my school and maybe u cant generalise to all private schools. but i really hope this isnt the same for a lot of schools cos it really sucks.
