my cat doesn't jump on anything except the chairs, the previous owners must have taught him well (he's even paper trained which i find very interesting. he was a stray that we found outside our house).

My mom's cats don't go on the counters in the kitchen nor the table. They've been trained and scolded not to do it. But they happily go everywhere else, on the dinning room table (thats where mom does her work, so we don't use it for eating), the desks, the computer desks, the beds, the chairs... the bathtub..

My dad's cats are usually found in the kitchen on the table or the counters, even though my dad is trying to make them stop!

I don't have a cat at the moment, but my mom always did (and still does) when I was growing up. They ran the house and went wherever they pleased. We just always wiped down the counters before we started to cook. My friend has a cat that climbs all over the place too. I think that's just what cat's do.
