In Finland it's the same as in Denmark, and I think it's very good. You can't really name your child anything weird, there is some sort of control. And it has got nothing to do with the church in that even though it's the church giving the baptism, it's not a church-regulated thing.

For example, a former Ms Finland named his son Jimi Henrik - from Jimi Hendrix, obviously, and I think it's appalling. In a small town like where she's from (and me too), that child's gonna have such an awful time at school with that name. It's like a name you joke about when you're growing up but don't really name your child that.

When my cousin had a daugher, and all the family were thinking of names... My dad suggested to name the child Wind (obviously in Finnish, and it's a legitimate name). He found it very funny. If the child would take her mother's surname, she'd be called Wind Millhill. If she'd take her father's name, she'd be called Wind Coat (meaning shell suit in Finnish). Naturally, she didn't name her that

And Mike, I really don't get your point about Japanese, Chinese etc names. There's a strong cultural and family tradition behind those names, and even if the families live in England, they shouldn't be made to name their children with English names just so that it would be easier for you and others to pronounce them That's one of the worst comments on names I've heard! It's not too much work to ask them how it's pronounced, and then you can write in your list of names next to the name your idea of how it's said.

My name, for example, exists in most languages, but it's pronounced differently in Finland and England. I always say it the way it's said in Finland (also the Italian way), because that's my name, not the Anglian version.

How do you pronounce your name?

When I read it I think Loor-rA.
or Law-ra

That's exactly how most English people pronounce it. I'm not sure how to explain it... It's more like La-ooh-ra. Hmm... Not like that either. Think of the word 'cow'. L-ow-ra. Make sense?

The Spanish way too! Laura was one of my favourite names until a friend of mine called Laura started making me hate her and her name I still like the name, but I usually get the image of this person and get chills down my spine!
