It's just the way it is pronounced in Australia as well. I use the way that I do because one of my cousins is called Lauren, pr. Law-ren (sort of), but I usually end up saying Loren because I'm lazy.

Well, the church doesn't rule in Denmark, so if you want to call your kid Moon Unit or Wind Coat ( ), you can go right ahead - you just can't have your kid baptized in the common church. And when the kid is about 13-14 it can't be confirmed, because it's not a member of the church. When the kid then grows old and dies, he or she can't be buried on sacred (church) grounds, because they were not members of the church, again because they were never baptized, because the so-called weird name is not approved...

But if one parent is foreign to Denmark, it is perfectly legal to call the kid a name native to the other country...

Having just written all this makes me realize, these are quite old-fashioned rules from when the church did indeed rule... Oh well

I once read a birth announcement on a Swedish paper for a baby girl called Prinsessa Leia

isn't religion just soooo wonderful. I am sure God cares....

I have a very common - good catholic name. I can not tell you how much fun I was made of because of my good ordinary catholic name.... So, needless to say I don't buy into the crap of others making fun of someone due to an unusual name. If they want to make fun of one, they will find something.

I say more power to the James Bond's and Jimi Hendrix's. My son has a name that is usually only associated with a very well known musician, and I always get asked if he was named after him. No he wasn't, we just happened to like that name. Period. Nobody else's business. Oh, and there was a discussion whether or not he could have been baptized in the catholic church, cause there is no saint with that name (neither first nor middle name) - good grief. Fortunately, our priest wasn't so hung up on old traditions - but then that is in the US, I am sure it would have been a bit more difficult in Europe.

Don't names exist to identify people? Some of the names of children I've taught have extremely different names, which because they sound so different to English generally I have difficulties picking up how it should sound. I don't see the point of having a traditional name which is going to cause problems for people to identify them! Just like parents who speak very little English, speak their native language in their homes and live in England. The English these people speak is really poor, to the extent I've had children who can't understand any English. Nothing wrong with not being able to speak English, but if you're living in England the parents should put traditions aside and give their children the best chance in the society they've chosen for them. Some names are fine, and easy, but I don't understand why you'd give a child a complicated name... I mean it can't be that much fun having to tell people your name over and over again because you’re remembered as being the person with the difficult name!

In Finland it's the same as in Denmark, and I think it's very good. You can't really name your child anything weird, there is some sort of control.
When I was growing up, not many girls had my name, and I loved the fact that it was unique, at least at that point in time. Why should there be control on what you name your child? I wouldn't want someone telling me what name is okay and what name isn't. What happens if you don't stick to these rules and name your child something weird?
