I used to have the most perfect phone manners. It's the way I was taught. I was polite - used good grammar (this is she speaking) etc. About 10 years ago in this country the solicitation phone calls started multiplying like rabbits. You could get 4 or 5 of them during dinner in the evening - a real pain in the ass. I got so ticked off that I started shouting "**** off and die" into the phone and slamming down the receiver. I used to feel guilty about this but I don't any more.

Things have gotten somewhat better since this country instituted the Do Not Call list. Theoretically, if you register for that list, general phone sales can't call you. It has helped but not eleiminated the problem completely.

And you should! Ever since I did the job for a while (selling insurances and surveys by phone) I feel sorry for all the poor people on the phone. I decided to quit the job when, a few days after 911 people were being so terribly rude on the phone, asking me wtf I was doing calling people in these terrible times. I was just doing my job, earning some pocket money . But I decided I had enough of all the rude people on the phone.

But as more years go by since I had the job, the less I sympathise with them. Thankfully enough, they don't seem to call mobile phone numbers and I don't have anything else than that .

As of last week they can call mobile numbers in this country - anything to make a buck . Many people have phone plans that charge them for the call even if somebody calls them. That sucks if you get a bunch of solicitation calls.

I have caller ID on my phone and I just don't pick up when I see it's an unlisted number. Saves me a lot of annoyance. Bonus that came along, was that my parents also have an unlisted number, so I didn't have to listen to my mom's babbling anymore either. Saves me a lot of annoyance as well

If you don't have caller ID or an answering machine, there are 2 guaranteed lines that will irritate unwanted callers:

#1:Hello. My cholesterol's down. (borrowed from a Cherios(sp?) commercial)
#2:Hello. Is your refridgerator running?

Juvenile? Yes. Hilarious though. Both have been used to great effect on annoying callers here.
