Most people kill them for their pelts/fur. Officials say the seal hunt provides income to about 12,000 hunters who live in remote communities in eastern Canada, where jobs are scarce. In Iles de la Madeleine, Quebec, 100 miles north of here, seal hunters say theirs is an honest profession.

Well I don't have a job, so I'll go out and start killing people who are annoying, that's worth doing isn't it?
it's much easier to maintain a living in a large city as opposed to some rural area and I'd imagine that if you had no choice and really needed to go out and make a living you'd do whatever you could do given the circumstances you found yourself in.

I'm not saying it isn't incredibly cruel but any type of fishing is extrremely dangerous especially up there and I doubt these guys are out on boats just because they don't like seals.

I'm living in rural area and I'm a vegetarian. Here are always many eatable plants all around. You don't need to kill for living.

Thanks for the update Nat, although it is not as pleasant as I would have loved.

i seriously doubt seal meat ios a staple of their diet and I'm fairly sure your work is something relative to the area ie you won't be working behind a desk in a 20 storey office block

I'm canadian and I live in Quebec so I know the people who practices thsi hunt. They are not the monsters you think, they are ordinary paople like you and me. I'm not a hunter, it's hard for me to kill a bug but I can handle some people could do this because I eat meat. Do you know the seals population is actually over the limits? Millions of seals are in the Saint-Lawrence river, they eat all the cods. Thousands of fishers are unemployed because there is no stock of cod actually. First because the men fished too much, second because the too heavy population of seals. One way or another the population will be controled, naturally or by hunt. Don't forget human is part of nature and from ages men hunt. Should we stop it and break the balance? I don't know. But I know, seal's hunting isn't worst than a beef dead plan. Did you see images of dead of chicken, porks (they cut troath), beefs? It's horrible so don't focus too much on seals.

A limit imposed by whom? Who are we to say how many of a certain species can live? If an animal escaped a zoo and killed people it would be killed, for doing what comes naturally, yet people "hunt" seals and such for their furs and do this for work.

It is not hunting, as hunting requires skill and instinct and it's something done for survival. Animals hunt in the wild. When man goes to kill animals that is precisely it, killing animals. We are more intelligent and able than them so as such we feel we have a right to hunt them, to keep them in cages etc.

Clubbing an animal to death simply for its skin is just monster.
