I really don't think Tash's comments was harmful in the least. If you have particular issues and were putting some meaning into her words - I don't think that's her or anyone else's "problem" but yours.

Ah, so you're fine with the fact that people who commit suicide are called selfish? Good for you.

I'm fine with the fact that people who commit suicide are called selfish *when* in order to put an end to their lives they risk someone else's life, yes.

However, I never said that - all my other posts were related to them going to heaven or not. So you inferring that I thought they were selfish was going a bit too far, eh?

i dont get how this has turned into a "lets bash people for what theyve said" debate....

what was being said before that was a really great, intelligent discussion and debate of opinions and feelings, which has spilled over.
Surely people are entitled to their own opinions?
surely we should respect their opinions whatever they are?
surely if someone is making a point even if it isnt their own personal belief we should all listen and think about it?
surely if we disagree we should still accept that there are other opinions than our own?

what some people forget and i mean no offence to anyone here, in this thread or on the board is that it is a MULTINATIONAL board, with people on here from all around the world, not just the UK and the US and a smattering of people from europe, but people from every continent (other than antarctica) and a LOT of countries, and languages. English is the common language we share here, and we should remember that sometimes, even for those of us who speak English as our native language, it can be very hard to express oneself in the way that they intend to. People for whom English isnt their native language do a great job, and i think we should allow for EVERYONE sometimes having a little difficulty in saying exactly what they intend, and we are all responsible to give people a little grace and not jump on their backs, and the same applies to the content of what is being said. if you dont like an opinion, then fine but make clear that what you dont like is the opinion and not the person. it is easily possible for everyone on the board to respond maturely and resonsibly without sensitive and contraversial issues being turned into witch hunts for people who dont have the same opinion as you.

just a few thoughts.

Well it’s good to see the board has some diplomats and mature rational thinkers out there! I totally agree with your sentiments and you put you put your points across well, though maybe you’ve done one or two of us a slight disservice. Far from being a “witch hunt” I think we all realise that this is a shared board which promotes (mainly ) free speech and that will include a cross section of every single political persuasion/interest/philosophy etc. We all realise that there will be a broad spectrum of users from ultra-conservative saints to dangerously ill-informed, self-important, slavering gun-nuts and while they all are entitled to their opinion without rebuke I think what myself and a few others found objectionable here was a lack of sensitivity in posting.

If suddenly turned round and said that everyone who contracted cancer or became HIV positive deserved a painful death because as a whole, society has contributed greatly to the propagation of these illnesses, this may be an opinion (and for the record it’s not my personal belief) but posting it would be just a bit insensitive to many out there who have had relatives who have succumbed to such so I wouldn’t say it out of courtesy. What would actually be worse is if I said it and it wasn’t my deeply held opinion, that’s either malicious trolling or ignorance.

I accept what you say about the language barrier though… ever since I painted the phrase “leche cul!” on a banner in french class when I was 11 after a mix up looking up the equivalent of “suck-up” in a slang dictionary… at least the teacher was amused.
