Default Signed Potter edition fetches £27,500

A first edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, signed by author JK Rowling, sold for £27,500 at auction.

The rare exhibit was bought at Sotheby's in New York after being put up for sale by the author's father, Peter.

The copy was given to Mr Rowling for Father's Day 2000 and was signed: "Lots of love from your first born", with nine kisses.

Sotheby's would not say why Mr Rowling had decided to auction the treasure, along with six other rare books signed by his daughter.

Four of the exhibits sold, all to anonymous bidders.

The Goblet of Fire first edition sold for £27,500

A first edition presentation copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, signed by Ms Rowling for her father and stepmother, sold for £11,000, well below the expected price tag.

A first edition presentation copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets went for £6,200, just within the asking price.

It was signed: "To Dad and Jan with lots of love from Jo," and Rowling had circled the edition number, remarking: "1st edition I got one!"

A signed first paperback edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone sold for £5,500, again slightly below the expected price
