Default Significance of "The Rainbow"

This is well at home in the non-BJ section - but I'm wondering if a few people can help me.

I want to know what is the significance of the rainbow? It emerges in many scorpions, dio, rainbow... and other such bands songs... "fly to the rainbow... rainbow in the dark.... we'll catch the rainbow"

what is it's symbolism? is it an occultist symbol?

I'd be interested to hear peoples' inputs on this one...

either way it's quite a spectacular image (the rainbow on a silk black background) - it seems to me to be quite a potent magical symbol...

Rainbows are associated with gay people. I know if you see a rainbow sticker on a car that either means they are or support gays.

I am not kidding.

Aren't the colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue and black? as they appear on the gay flag? (I only know this because there is quite a large gay area in Toronto and not because I am a sh1t stabber, like Mr Bliss.)

lol. Nice way of putting it krb. I'm sure you've probably offended a few people with that statement, lol. (Not me though, lol)

presumably (gay symbol aside) it is representative of some sort of Utopia or mytholigical journey/dream - trying to find the source or end of a rainbow... is like a horizon - you can see it but you can never really SEE it...

i don't know - i presume it's a gay symbol simply because of the bright "pretty" colours rather than anything deep...

Jess - I think what you said is very good, sounds right to me... while it's the sun after the rain, i think the use of it in a night-time setting in literature and music means something else... possibly its just something magical, but then again it could be some sort of foreboding... a world of black, with the "light at the end of the tunnel"... that never ends...

there's lots of meanings, maybe that's why it's used so often ??
