i have to agree with goose....our comedians are the best in the world. american humour is a disgrace.....there's no proper joke telling or sketches. (plus your comedians all laugh at their own jokes)

Around here the English aren't exactly known for their outstanding sense of humor either. But I am not the person to ask being I hate comedians in general. I never could handle stand up comedy. Jerry Seinfeld is the one exception for me.

thats because you dont understand it, its called subtle humour, not loud + large (the American way)

let me list

Jasper Carrot
Billy Connolly
Ali G (amusing)
Baddiel + Skinner
Graham Norton
Johhny Vegas
Bill Bailey
Ricky Tomlinson
Rik Mayall
Victoria Wood
Steve Coogan
Peter Sellers
Rory Bremner (something tells me American TV wont show him..)
Monty Python team
Rowan Atkison
Ben Elton
Peter Kay
Fry + Laurie
Spike Milligan
Morecambe and Wise

just a tiny selection

all I can think of from America is that Rich Hall person

No, it's because canned humor doesn't always entertain me. Spontaneous humor is what I most enjoy.

The only thing dumber than the flat out stereotypes in the initial post are the ones perpetuated by the argument that only English comedians are funny because American humor is too big and loud whereas UK humor is more subtle. Rubbish. It's about as subjective as music.

For the record: Peter Sellars and Monty Python - untouchable geniues period, regardless of your background. Accept that or be gone.

In the US, our limited access to Rik Mayall is 3 things: him skulking in the pub in American Werewolf in London, Drop Dead Fred and The Young Ones... so we don't have much frame of reference. Rowan Atkinson is Mr. Bean here... that's it really.
I'm sorry but, I've seen the imported version of ALI G here on HBO and I've yet to tolerate a full episode. Not unfunny, just not my thing so I don't find him funny. However, give me Eddie Izzard and I'm more than happy! Or Billy Connelly... they're both brilliant and hysterical. Here in the US, give me Jon Stewart or Dennis Miller or George Carlin. You might not agree with the politics but they are brilliant too.
And they're not over-the-top.... THAT's a stereotype.

U mean Slapstick?? Americans r good at that!!

I don't find stand-up Seinfeld very funny.... In fact.. Have yet to see a funnier sitcom than Blackadder. Makes Friends look like Eastenders!!
