Smoking Ban England

Starts today. Anyone going out to the pub tonite?? I was in the pub last night, all the smokers were saying they're giving up today or drinking at home from now on. Must say im looking forward to going out and not coming home smelling like an ashtray

We had those kinds of resolutions when it was banned over here. And actually very few people did keep them. Either they go out to smoke in the street now, look for places where it is allowed (places smaller than 100m can choose whether to forbid it or allow it) or are extremely bitter about it so they 'smoke' your conversation anyway.

I don't go to pubs much, but for the sake of it being banned everywhere else I'm certainly glad. I was reading a discussion on another forum and it's amazing how stubborn some of the smokers are - suggesting that people who don't like it should **** off elsewhere, rather than them get lost and smoke outside instead of forcing it on us. They go on about civil liberties, as if this is something that is a major thing which everyone is entitled to. People are entitled to breath fresh air, not smoke.

not before time

They banned smoking indoors in New York way before they did here in Jersey. It was such a pleasure to go out to dinner - or go out to have a drink and not have my sinus allergies kick up due to all the smoke. We would drive to the city to go out rather than stay local because of it.

Eventually, New jersey wised up and as of last year there is no smoking at all in in restaurants, bars etc. It is a pleasure for me - that's for sure.

And I will add that I am a convert LOL. I used to smoke a lot - I grew up smoking as did so many in my generation. I quit at the age of 31 when I had my first kid and I have never smoked (cigarettes anyway) again. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that people who do smoke must do it outside.

Im really looking forward to the smoking ban and will enjoy going out more I stopped smoking 7 yrs ago and still occasionally feel like a cig , so its not easy sitting in a pub surrounded by smoke and then coming home smelling of it when you have chosen not to smoke anymore.

I am confused by some of the rules though, some pubs are buying smoking shelters however a bus shelter I saw had a no smoking ban on it even though it has openings at each end. There, under the no smoking sign sitting in the bus shelter was a lady smoking ! What are you suppose to do call the police !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I real cant see how this can be enforced.

Apparently there will be new 'officers' employed to enforce the ruling is adhered to. As much as I am absoluetly 110% behind the ruling I'm sure there are many areas in our society that could do with the extra manpower more than having people checking bars for smokers!

Up here, apparently there are 'enforcers' walking around the streets to give out fines to people doing this kind of thing, but I've never seen one ever. They do exist supposedly- I remember reading someone complaining because they hadn't fined anyone for the first month or whatever.

We had the same kind of talk up here about stopping or drinking at home too, but most people didn't go through with it. You got the newspaper columnists telling us they were outraged etc etc, but from the day it kicked in and ever since, I've never seen or heard any problems with it. I do smoke, and have never been troubled by the ban- it's not an issue to step outside for a quick smoke. Actually, quite often you get better conversations going outside than you do inside!

Bus shelters, not so much but actual public venues HAVE to enforce it as the fines they get for allowing patrons to get away with it is considerably larger than the individual fine imposed on the offender.
