thats madness, we have far more serious crime to deal with , how they can they justify the cost for these officers...next it will be people photos from CCTV footage on tv... caught red handed with a cigarette ... catch the smoker... !!!!!!!!

haha thats quite funny about the extra officers... i've been told that in clubs they'll be people floating about ready to hand out fines to smokers, £60 for the person and a fine of thousands for the owners..

There have been non-smoking bars and restaurants for years and nothing whatsoever from preventing you from visiting them. If you have friends who smoke, I'm sure the vast majority would have beem happy to oblige you and visit your choice of venue for a change, if only you had asked.

Apart from hospitality workers, the biggest beneficiaries of the ban seem to be people too cowardly to speak their mind amongst friends and the feeble-minded who insist they like the ban "because it will help me give up". If you need a national law to get you on your way, i don't fancy your chances of quitting succesfully.

For protecting staff, it is a sledgehammer to crack a nut. It is entirely, absolutely 100% possible to imagine a world where consenting adults are allowed to smoke in well-ventilated rooms, shut off from anti-smokers by a well-sealed door. There is no evidence whatsoever that the occasional contact with cigarette smoke that would be required to empty ash trays is at harmful to health - we would afterall be talking 30 seconds a day here.

Again, most smokers I know have no desire to inflict smoke on anyone - just to be treated with dignity.

The only position from which the ban makes sense is as a means of forcing people to quit cigarettes. It is a rare anti-smoker who will admit this, however, as even they know that to try and modify the behaviour of complete strangers in this manner is just plain rude. To try and justify it using guilt and fear as we have seen in this country would be more correctly labelled bullying.

Even the assumption that everyone wants to live to an old age and needs to be helped in this direction is utter crap. Long-slow decline an a piss-stinking nursing home? No thanks.

Again, most smokers I know have no desire to inflict smoke on anyone - just to be treated with dignity. If this takes a separate, hermetically sealed smoking room to protect the general population, so beit.

I'm sure it will be a lovely change for you and your clothes, however, it is absolutely not the role of the law to prevent the squeemish from being mildly irritated on a night out.

Just in terms of worker protection it would be far, far more beneficial to this country if we properly enforced the minimum wage. I would wager the ratio of staff enforcing the smoking ban will be many, many times bigger.

Default ooh. ooh. one more point.

The ban will simply transfer the burden of ill-health from workers who knowingly chose to enter the hospitality industry to the innocent children of mostly (low income) parents who have chosen to stay at home and smoke in their living room.

A bad, bad law.

Or those of us who like going to our local pub which is a short walk away rather than having to drive somewhere, and will appreciate the smoke-free atmosphere.

We can make EVERYONE happy here. Except those who think they have a right to say what I can and can't do to my body, but don't get me started.
