ok, why the hell should I go to a pub/restraunt/bar/nightclub and breath in OTHER PEOPLES smoke? Just because THEY have an filthy addiction and a selfish obsession, why should *I* be one who has to suffer from it as well?

Passive smoking is just as bad for my health as it is smoking myself. I dont see why i should inhale someone elses drug. I would like to live a healthy life, but smokers are doing their best to ruin that for myself and other non-smokers.

If smokers wish to smoke, then they have their own homes to do that. They should should not be risking other peoples lives, just becuase they are too weak and pathetic to wait until they get get home. I look forward to the day when public-smoking is banned here in England.

I am totally for the banning of smoking, but I can't help but think of other drugs which are freely used.

Alcohol may not effect others directly, you generally can't force someone to drink another person's alcohol, but the consequences of someone drinking it can have big impacts on others, in car accidents, increased acts of violence, etc.

Alcohol is a bigger killer than most illegal drugs, at least so I have read, and yet it remains legal. Though I do recognise that most people are just casual drinkers having a good time.

I think it should be more to do with the people selling it. If someone is obviously drunk then they shouldn't be sold any more alcohol as they are not in full control of themselves and as such a risk to themselves and others. I saw a good thing on TV which can be fitted to cars so that drivers have to take a breathalyser and if they are over the limit the car won't start.

the problem with that is that alcohol effects people differently. We are all aware of people being able to 'handle' their drink, but at the other hand, you have people being inebriated BEFORE they actually reach the illegal limit. Particularly women. Hence, you still could have a person getting behind the wheel while not having reached the legal limit, yet not being able to react appropriately while driving.

DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE - SIMPLE!!!

The Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) in Australia have their age old logo:

If you drink, then drive, you're a bloody idiot.

Or New Zealands take on it:

If you don't drink, then drive, you're a bloody good mate.

Besides, while I do see the benefits of the machines attached to cars, I think that by the time they are implemented the damage would already have been done. Unless the machines are implemented in all cars, at great expense, the monetary cost may be well considered worth it when balanced with human life.

Not all drinking occurs with cars anyway. When people are travelling on a train or walking down a street and run across an intoxicated person, then I don't think that those machines in cars will help much.

Actually, evidence these days seems to show that passive smoking isnt as harmful as first thought; although it was hushed up obviously

They were going to ban smoking in all public places in Derby at one point. Like most things here, it didn't really 'happen'. I'd like to see more bans, as people have already discussed... why should non-smokers suffer?

Out of curiosity Dan, where or what is this 'evidence' you talk about?

Smoking was banned in restaurants and other public areas in Florida about two years ago. It's great. I love being able to go to dinner and eat without breathing in smoke. I wish smoking would be banned totally. My allergies just can't take the second hand smoke.
