I agree with Rashbaum too....there definitely should be designated areas in this world for people to throw sh*t....a big tent in a field full of smokers and sh*t throwers. It'd be a good party.

If an employee wants to take a job where they KNOW they will be exposed to second hand smoke, that's their choice, just like they can make the choice to go look for employment in a healthier environment. As long as no one's forcing them to apply for, accept, and work a job that's detrimental to their health, I say no foul.
Unfortunately, as is the case with a lot of the student population, some people are forced to have to work behind a bar in clubs and pubs for financial reasons. Bar-work is pretty much the staple constituent of job vacancies amongst students and with cash being in short supply for a lot of us, the only option is to pull pints in smoky, disgusting conditions - how do they escape having to breathe in carcinogenic second-hand fumes?

I’m sensing not only an enjoyable new pastime but many arrests… perfect.

This is what I said on this above:
As for the staff. I am not saying at all that they should be forced to breathe smoke. Smoking at bars is prohibited in Finland anyways. It is up to the staff to enforce that, and some places do allow it. However, they don't have to. So, if bars are non-smoking areas, and no table service is provided to the smoking tables, no smoke should get to the staff to be inhaled.

Yes but, having worked behind a bar myself for several years, when the smokers are forced to come and order their drinks, they bring their fags with them! And whilst you are rushing around like a mad-arse trying to serve customers, they are leant over the bar blowing their smoke over the counter - and none of the smokers I have ever served drinks to has had the courtesy to refrain from exhaling their fumes in the barstaffs' faces. It's complete pig-ignorance and selfish - if we wanted to choke on toxic gases we'd take up smoking ourselves!

Spunkywho:Unfortunately, I do not have not done enough research on OSHA to have an informed opinion on it one way or another. I'll look into it though.

RS8MB0R8:Is anyone forcing you to work those jobs? If not, if you and others choose of your own free will to work as bartenders in places you know beforehand are going to full of second hand smoke, I still say it should be up to the owner. It is his PROPERTY. As long as he owns it, he should be able to decide the manner in which it will be run.

Can't be bothered reading 4 pages of stuff but being from Scotland and working and spending a large percentage of my time in the pub means it's goign to affect me even though I don't smoke.

To be honest I'm not exactly sure what i think. I never really noticed how bad it is to sit next to people smoking until I got to uni this year because very few of my friends outwith uni smoke. same as when i started workign in the pub but you do get used to it. the worst part is coming out stinking of smoke which I won't miss a bit.

It's a good idea but it's kinda ironic people sitting drinking moaning about the detrimental health effects of smoking.

Adrian wait till you need a bit of financial independence from you're parents. Pubs and clubs happen to be one of the most available jobs for students and in alot of cases you either work their or don't work at all.
