Well, Becky, last week we had very rough weather in Croatia too. It's not exactly tornado, but we had there's a strong wind called 'bura', a catabatic wind especially common in Croatia. So around Rijeka the wind was blowing 214 km/h, on the entire coast average speed is over 120 km/h, some towns are without power, islands are cut off from the shore (no ferry boats), bridges closed, flights cancelled, roads closed, roofs flying, trees pulled from the ground in Zagreb... Don't you just love the forces of nature?

Such windy weather isn't unusual in Croatia. Last year around Maslenica we had wind up to 314 km/h. At the moment there is a strong high pressure over NW Europe and a low pressure over Central Mediterranian. The Adriatic coast (N Adriatic) is wright in the mill between the two. If there would be a deep low preassure from NW and there would be a high pressure over The Mediterranean, we would experiance a stormy SW wind.

Nat, are the winds you get in Croatia with rainstorms or are they winds without the rain? It sounds terrible!

Allwyn, there isn't a lot of warning. We knew a storm system was approaching and capable of spinning off the funnel clouds, but you never know when or where they'll strike. They do tend to follow the same paths though.
