Default Somebody, ANYBODY..please HELP

Am bamboozled, tired and utterly frustrated....hope some one may be able to help.
5 days ago McAfee alerted my daughter that there was something on the pc called Exploit-mydoom. She quarantined it, did a scan for the mydoom virus [wasn't found] and then continued using the computer. Yesterday the same alert [Exploit-mydoom] appeared so she used the advanced tools on virus scan, quarantined it again and then deleted it. She was concerned though that perhaps the mydoom virus was lurking somewhere in the pc, so she went to Symantec, got the removal tool, followed the instructions. However, once she had done that, she forgot to enable System Restore - she stayed on the pc for a while after that and then disconnected from the internet and shut down. Approx. 1 hour later, I switched the computer on, and long story short this is what the desktop looks like
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...a/messedup.jpg
and just about any other text area...all the folders/files also have this weird math looking font. I have trouble using the pc at the best of times, but this font [if that's what it is] is making life very difficult.
I downloaded the Stringer program, but it didn't find anything. The Norton's version of that also didn't find anything, neither did the Microsoft online virus scan.

I'm not sure why we're able to view things online, but I took a screenshot of IE. Everything that's actually part of IE comes up with the weird font, but anything on the actual webpage is shown in english.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../messedup3.jpg

And this is exactly how the contents of a folder appear

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../messedup1.jpg

A few people have suggested that the fonts on the computer are either missing or corrupted, which seems likely. But I'm having a hard time understanding how that happened if three different virus scans have not detected a virus/problem. We have eventually been able to find the fonts folder in this heiroglyphic mess and there is not one font showing up [there were 600+]...since then we have been able to download a font, take pot luck and rely on memory of where to go on the pc, unzipped and install it...at least we can see somethings, but still hasn't eliminated the problem you see in the pics links I've posted...anyone got a clue what/how/why this happened or how to fix it.
The info below is what we posted at McAfee in order for someone there to try and maybe figure it out

W/XP Pro
IE6
VS pro 7.03.6000 [current McAfee version]
DAT 4411
Eng 4.3.20
Exploit-mydoom
path: C:/Documents and Settings/Users/All/Documents/!ReadMe.exe

Cheers,
Sharon

Edit: It seems that all the fonts on the computer have been deleted. I copied the fonts over to this computer from our old one and everything seemed to be alright again, but I rebooted the comp and all the fonts were gone again.

I don't know what's going here. I'd like to find out why the fonts disappeared, but right now I'd like to work out how to get them back on the computer and how to keep them there.

Thanks,
RJ (Sharon's daughter)

Exploit-Mydoom:

http://hq.mcafeeasap.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=101014

scroll down a bit & u find removal instructions. No point in trying to restore fonts or whatever might be missing until the problem itself is removed.

cheers,
Stoney

Thanks Stoney...seems the problem is actually within McAfee itself. The pc is virus/trojan/malware free...posting over at McAfee online forums [and chatting to others] this seems to be a problem a lot of people have or are having. McAfee has a component in it called QuickLite...seems if that's used it grabs the fonts key register and then flicks it out with anything else it finds. When ever we turn the pc off and then back on, the weird font reappears....have some instructions here of how to try and go about fixing the problem [which is a bit like dropping me in the middle of Siberia without a "How to Speak Basic Russian" book]...would be a lot easier if there were screenshots to go with the instructions [and I wasn't a chicken to have a go - scared of doing more damage] but it's gotta be better than having to open the network on the other pc, and then copy the fonts from one pc to the other every time we want to use the main pc. If all else fails, we will have to get the guy who fixed the pc last time to reinstall Windows XP Pro and see if that works. [he fixed it from a MAJOR crash earlier this year and kindly, and generously, put XP, McAfee Pro and the full Nero on...but didn't give us the discs...so, yeah...kinda a bit stuffed..but it could be worse...been there, done that...]

Think once this is sorted we might go back to using Vet antivirus stuff.

Cheers,
S.

You don't need anything fancy to remove the MyDoom. Just download the DAT-files from the page Stone showed you or here:http://www.mcafeesecurity.com/us/dow...es/default.asp

double-click on them and let them install, then run McAfee again. You need a .DAT-file and an enginge file, but the exact file depends on the version of McAfee you have.

Don't. That's worse. What you need to do is first re-install Windows. It should fix any problems, but DO NOT LET IT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET before you've installed it fully and have the firewall enabled. First use the in-built firewall, but as soon as you've got it running, go and get a better one. ZoneAlarm is free and works fine.

Never, NEVER surf the net without a firewall. Anti-virus programs only try to delete viruses already on your machine, they won't prevent any from getting into it. And many try to fool the anti-virus programs, so you might already have more than just one.

Last time I re-installed win I accidentally did set-up internet connection *before* installing firewall/antivir. And found like 4 bugs from my comp after being connected for something like 10minutes. *Only* connected to the net, not surfing at all.

I used ZoneAlarm for ages, it is a pretty good one and there is a free edition or a better pro edition, not sure how much they charge for it though. Apparently though the best ones are hardware ones built into routers and such, thats what I use and when I had ZoneAlarm running too nothing even got through that ZoneAlarm had to stop, the hardware one got them all.

My PC had McAfee on when I go it but it sucks, lol, I've used AVG AntiVirus for ages and never had problems with viruses since.

Can you combine those 2 on 1 PC? I mean I put McAfee on my PC and had Norman still on it and my PC just didn't do anything anymore for like half an hour and it crashed from time to time. I have AVG now but want to reïnstall McAfee, but I would be very if my PC crashed right now as i need it for school and writing papers and stuff! Can you tell? Or is AVG alone safe? It did notice a lot of viruses so far though!

Yep. I've seen the same thing happen many times. Which is why you need to disconnect the cable before re-installing Windows. It's a nice operating system Microsoft built us, isn't it?

Nope. Never use 2 anti-virus softwares at the same time. They will cause bad confilcts.

AVG, Norman etc are pretty bad. The only ones worthwhile are F-Secure and Norton.
