Well even with all sorts of copy protection you have to be able to listen to the damn cd right? So play the cd on your computer and use a digital program to record it. Then you can rip and burn that all you want. Or play it on your cd player and patch the audio into your computer's sound card and capture it digitally. Then rip and burn it. As long as your sound card is decent you won't hear the difference on your iPod.

Back when we only had vinyl - the first thing I did was copy the album to a cassette tape. That way the album lasted longer and I could play the tape in the car. That was 30 years ago. The executives at Sony (and elsewhere) must have heir heads up their ass not to know this.

The problem is that some discs won't even load in a pc or mac, this one I have doesn't. It won't even recognise it, it just shows as an empty disc.

It HAS to play in a regular cd player doesn't it. Just use patch cables from the cd player to your sound card - you can buy a stereo Y cable for about $4.00 here unless you need one 20 feet long - and then capture it digitally. There are a bunch of easy cheap programs that will let you do that.

Actually, the copy protected CDs don't work on all CD players. Especially the older ones and car CD players have problems with it. The new Sony protection works just as bad.

Wait a minute - if the copy protected cds don't play in a pc and they won't play on all cd players - why buy the freakin cd? You are paying to hear the music aren't you - or is that an out dated concept

Yeah, and if you want to be picky, they're not even CDs. They're close to a CD but the format is different. That's why they have to mark copy-protected CDs. I don't buy copyprotected Cds at all. If you do, you can always return them to the store, they're obligated to take them back, at least in Finland. So you buy the CD, copy it and return the disk. Neat.

I guess I don't buy them either since I have only run into one that had that problem - the Velvet Revolver cd. I got around that one by turning off autorun. The cd played fine in a regular cd player though. I didn't realize that the format was different either. I do think that they are shooting themselves in the foot in the long run - but it's still all about control on their part.

I have a ton of those and I am really glad you posted that article back when - otherwise I'd be screwed.

I happen to listen to my music only via ipod or computer - sorry if that is not what the record company execs do....

The new Xbox 360 will let you stream your music from your computer to your xbox to the tv and surround sound system (I know other systems do that too, but the xbox is pretty much a staple in everybodys household and people don't need to be computer whizzes to use them). This is where the future goes. The future will hold a myriad of ways to listen to music, too bad the record labels seem to be way behind on technology

It's not like you couldn't do that with a PC and unlike XBox 360, you won't have to pay for it if you use a PC.

They want to be a part of the future, but they're just too damn greedy for their own good. I mean, $1 per poorly MP3-coded song? $5 I could pay for a FLAC-quality CD, but for Mp3's? Hah.
