Like Ice said, we have spelling and grammar rules for a reason. Given the examples I've seen of my generation's writing ability, I guess I should count myself lucky that proper communication was always stressed in my household. Sure, I may misspell a word here or there, but it's always unintentional.

But I have nothing against poor spelling, unless it is to such an extreme that you don't know what the person is saying. If I can understand you, I'm not going to hold your posting to high standards.

For magazines, advertisements, and other out-in-the-open or important communication...exacting standards for spelling and grammar are a must-have.

I agree with Adrian and Ice. I cannot believe the problems with grammar and spelling that people my age and younger have. Every now and then, I have a messenger conversation with my 15 year old brother. Between the "yo tahts not tru" and the general butchering of the English language, I just get frustrated and end the conversation.

That being said, there are some older people who do have grammar issues. For example, I had a teacher in high school who used to say, "I seen you do it" or "I seen that movie last night." It drove me crazy. My friends will even use the word 'seen' just to get a reaction.

I'm sure glad that someone else posted this. I would be afraid of being accused of being an grouchy old fart
I am constantly surprised by people (and not just kids either) that can't even speak the English language properly and English is their first language. Many of the people that post here speak better English, and it's not their first language. If I tried to post in Spanish I would probably butcher the language but at least it wouldn't be intentionally.
As Ice mentions though, there are people here that completely disregard even the most basic rules. I generally disregard their posts - sometimes because I have a hard time understanding them. I should point out that I have a 16 year old daughter and her grammer is spotless. Her friends though are another story. They all went to school together so it's even hard to blame the school. It must come down to what is important to the parents.

A school can teach a child how to fully utilise a language, but unless someone else, such as parents, are there to enforce it then the child can simply become lazy and, as Kathleen put it, butcher the language.

I can't say that I'm too pleased with the American language, after all it isn't exactly English, thus is should be renamed American but I can tolerate it moreso than I can the "txt" language.

I've been accused of so many things that "an grouchy old fart" would be a nice addition to the list.

If I partake in any serious discussion I try to write more clearly and "better" than I would in a conversation thread, which I consider to be more casual. I don't spend any longer typing my replies, I just often use a more varied range of words than in casual conversation, much the same as comparing writing an essay to having a conversation with friends.

Nope, I didn't, but I still used capital letters, which seem to have gone missing from your post.
