I do use lol but only because it can be difficult to give context to something online, so I could intend something as sarcastic but if I don't indicate it, by using lol, it may get taken seriously or be misconstrued.

Like Kathleen said, there's a time and a place for everything. I personally am too much of a stickler not to use proper capitals, punctuation etc. I do think it makes the writer look simple outside of the context of sms, messenger etc. When it's a message board where you're (hopefully) having an intelligent-ish discussion, and where a lot of people are non-native, it comes across as not even lazy, but just plain simple (notice how I'm avoiding the word stupid).

Another thing is that when people learn to use the txt way of writing, it's very easy to un-learn (assuming a learning has happened in the first place) proper spelling and grammar. And whilst the English language is undergoing a major breaking period, partly due to txt, we're not there yet and I challenge anyone using a language like that for example in their CV to find a job.

I know, I know, you're not here to look for a job, but you're here to make an impression one way or another.

And the reason why non-native English speakers use "better" English than the natives is simply because we're taught it properly, whereas most natives aren't.
