I've been in Tenerife in 2000 and I didn't like it.
I rent a car and did a trip all around the island.
I have to say that Playa de las Americas is the best place of the island for the night life (I mean, not great but decent) but concerning the beach...nothing special. I'd rate it 5/10.
I won't come back...If I were you I'd go to another place

I've been to Gran Canaria and it was fantastic. Maspalomas beach is a MUST! The waves there are amazing. Definitely try scuba-diving if you get the opportunity too - I'd never been before but it is totally awesome!!

We were in Lanzorote last year and I LOVED it and defintely want to go back sometime. One of the best holidays ever.

Gran Canaria we were going to go to, but my aunt was there and said she didnt really like it...it was dirty, I know thats only one persons opinion though.

Because we are going in October, our choice is fairly limited if we want a bit of heat...travel agents told us Canary Islands or the south of Spain...costa del sol and all that.

Thanks for all of your replys!

Before you book your holiday consider the implications of the following sentence:

Bangkok is the Tenerife of Asia.

Tenerife can be replaced with Benidorm, Salou, Lloret, Ibiza, .... etc. Basically, any 'resort' destination.

nah Tenerife is a million miles from them. fair enough it's still a fairly dirty place but compared to salou it's like paradise.

If you go, go on the mercat catamaran tour. you sail round the island on a catamaran and get to see whales n dolphins and et to swim in the sea. it's brilliant but give the water park a miss.
