the book i'm reading just now is called dictators: stalin's russia and hitler's germany but richard overy if it's something that interests you.
Russia always interested me, as a matter of fact.
I'm not a socialist myself, but still Karl Marx (who has almost nothing to do with Russia! ) was still a brilliant mind.

I don't know what you are studying Jim, but I guess it has something to do with these kinds of historical things (such as WW's and so on), or perhaps you are just reading it because of pure interest?

my modules for this term are

modern political though: just by coincidence the past week we've been doing karl marx and marxism. although i don't agree with it int he slightest and don't like him as a person, it's pretty interesting given that it's such a different idea. IMO the 3rd way is a much more viable alternative than his communism.

western european politics: which intertwines alot with western european history and is alot more interesting than i imagined it would be.

western european history from 1914-present: which is obviously where the war/ hitler/ stalin stuff comes into play.

and i do scots history from 1469-1603 which is basically about the renaissance and reformation in scotland during the period.

as you can imagine, the european history and politics are mutual in alot of places.

I was supposed to be doing 20th century russia next term but the lecturer got a different job so now i'm doing history of the US which i'm kinda bummed about because this period in russian history is so interestign and fascinating on so many levels.

history and politics is something I'm incredibly interested (as you might have noticed) and the main reason I'm doing this course is because i want to teach history and modern studies. it's much easier doing something you have a passion for. in fact this year i've only missed one day which was due to a funeral whereas last year i barely went to a sociology or economics lecture because i just didn't like them.

if you're interested in stalins russia then the overy book is great. it's not a biography it's more of an overview of their regimes and is really interesting with regards to how they utilised their power and how their rule evolved over the years. it is a textbook in theory but i'm reading it purely out of interest.

Thanks for the tip on the book, great!

Yeah, I find Marx theories to be a bit different, but still, if don't remember completely wrong now, didn't Marx take a lot of ideas from the No. 1 liberal Adam smith?? and this is something that i find rather interesting..

Adam smith is another of my fav. But that has to do with my interest in economics.

well adam smith was technically the worlds 1st economist and since marx wanted capitalism to be abolished i find that kinda hard to imagine....

smith was from kircaldy in scotland btw (lovely wee village) just for some jbj useless trivia.

i've got a book called free lunch thats got chapters on famous economic thinkers through history. the marx chapter isnt great but ill give the smith one a read later and see if there's any merit in it.
