First off I HAVE to say it: Shouldn't it be the best song ever WRITTEN?.. okay im sorry.. haha. I had to do it and if only my English teacher saw me now - haha.. EXTRA CREDIT! Okay.. okay..

I have no idea what the best song would be. I havent listened to all the songs in the world yet. Even though the ones mentioned already are very quite good picks - .

I think anything by Bon Jovi, Queen, some good hits from Foreigner (Cold as Ice, Jukebox Hero), David Bowie, and just some random jumble. Then again I also like this one:

"Whats that smell?"
"Whats that smell?"
"Its Taco Bell!"
"How can you tell?"
"I looooove that smell!"
"And its cheap as well"
"And when you eat it,"
"You can tell"

It works better if you know the melody though - haha.

For me, the BEST one is "Country Feedback" by R.E.M. ("Out of Time" album), and the most BEAUTIFUL one is "Nightswimming", from "Automatic for the People" album.

NIGHTSWIMMING

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer.
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.
The moon is low tonight.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
of recklessness and water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.

Oh, I love that song - its so ironic too! Somehow, I imagine an ice skating routine with that song - with all the jumps the guitar makes. Its a beautiful song, for sure.

I'm submitting any song off of Meatloaf's Back Into Hell. These are great songs! I don't know of any way to say how much I like the lyrics for these songs. They're great!

Come a little bit closer
Come here now

no offence but even though i love bon jovi's stuff i wouldn't rate them as some of the greatest songs ever written. they make us smile, cr or whatever and thats great but they aren't exactly modern masterpieces. no offence to anyone and if u trully believe that dry county or in there arms are 2 of the greatest songs ever written then its fine, i just dont agree.

for me best song would have to be Always on My Mind by Elvis, beautiful lyric and melody. the background to the song with him and Priscilla splitting up is totally captured in the song. i think it's a song that u couldnt make sound bad if you tried. willie nelson and the pet shop boys covers of it are top class too.

Just Older isnt a masterpiece ?

Thats not my favourite song, I cant commit to one as its too much of an injustice to many others.
