The Catholic religion: something to think about

the Pope has come out and said that turning off life support machines etc... for people who are fatally ill is a sin because we are in no capacity to judge their standard of life. (i dunno about you but eating mushed crap through a tube while in a coma doesn't exact sound like you're livin la vida loca)

and we all know that they reckon abortion is wrong too.

But, is the whole idea of the Catholic religion not to get into heaven and if so.... what's the problem with letting the people go there (or to purgatory)

who is the pope to tell people whether they wish to live or not?

why should the rights of a man who is fatally ill be so different to a man who isnt.

well isn't the Pope allegedly picked by God or something intelligent like that?

perhaps, but that doesnt mean he has any right to decide on ppl's livelihood, especially those who dont care or know him in at all... im not sure about the catholic reiligon so im not sure about its views on afterlife....

you know the pope is against lot`s of things. I am catholic and live in a catholic country but most people don't really care about what he says.
If we live like he wants us too, we mustn't have sex until marriag, and when we are finally married we should only have sex if we want to have kids cause even condoms are against god lol, so stupid.
I know that beeing atholic is qutie useless but well other christian churches don't make sense either so who cares
(and after all it`s law that we have to pay taxes to the church so more and more people leave the church as soon we have to pay

The catechism even says that speeding over 120 km/h is a sin!

But you can't take what he says all that "serious". It's just some kind of guidelines you should follow if you really believe in what he stands for. What I wonder is, if you belong to a religion whose head is not the Pope and sin without really knowing you are committing a sin... is that a sin? Will you go to Hell for that?

At any rate... most established religions have something "stupid". Not even Anglicanism is free of that - I mean Henry VIII founded his own Church because he wouldn't get the Pope to sign his divorce!!!

Religion is between you and God, IMO.

Well not everyone does that nowadays!!! Mostly elderly people.

It's about not eating meat on Fridays because Jesus died on a Friday. And it's not all of the year - only Lent (???) Fridays. I think it used to be about not eating anything at all on Fridays and eventually got to that. And eventually it'll disappear.

i think the idea behind it, is that you give the people the chance to live, no matter how ill they are. and when God decides that there time has come, they will die, no matter what, and without "help" from others. and the idea is also that if you don't help the people to survive you did a bad thing (not only doing bad things is a sin, but also not helping or not doing a good thing is a sin).

so much about the idea behind this, not saying that it is also my opinion. because i don't think that there's a God that decides whether somebody's time has come or not, the whole thing turns in a totally different discussion, but as long as you believe it (and the pope believes it and all catolics believe it in the eyes of the catholic chruch), his statement somehow does make sense.

but like davefan said: the reality looks totally different and also his statements of no sex before merriage or no condoms etc. seem really strange in our time. (well ok, i could accept the "no sex before merriage", but "using condoms is a sin" is really really stupid, especially because there are catholic countries in africa where people believe him, and where they have thousands of AIDS-victims every year)

Why could you accept the no-sex-before-marriage thing and not the no-condoms thing?
