I think having a feminine figure in religion is a sort of balance. If she wasn't there, the other most famous woman would be Eve, and she's not very good publicity! :P

If catholics want to believe that Mary is this person who they should view as a God , then thats up to them, but it is as if they chose personally to view Mary in this way, ie because Mary carried Jesus this will be how we will behave without any biblical instruction and begin hailing her.
I cannot find the basis for this belief in the bible . At no point does it say she should be prayed to , or act as a go between between humans and God, isnt that Jesus job. It also gives no indication that she has risen to be a Jesus type figure. There are a lot of good amazing prophets in the bible, some who gave their lives for their beliefs, at no time are we told to pray to any of them except to Jesus or God.
