I know it ain't cool anymore but Clapton is still one of the most soulful players. And Santana is the most melodically aware in my opinion.

Iīm not a guitar player but in my opinion Eddie Van Halen is THE man for all the improvements heīs done on the guitar playing.

Yngwie Malmsteen is fast and a lot technichal, but thatīs it. I like Kiko Loureiro (from Angra) much more, but thatīs my opinion.

As for compositions, Iīd go with Rafael Bittencourt also from Angra. What a great mind he has and what a great feeling he puts in Angraīs songs.

I think feeling is the most important thing so thatīs why I respect Richie Sambora so much, he got that.

yesterday night i saw the performance of santana @ the "rock am ring" festival in germany- absolutely unbelievable! his band consists only of the best musicians around (e.g. dennis chambers on drums...)- he's a living legend! another "killer" on the instrument are steve lukather (toto) and jennifer batten (micheal jackson); for sure eddy van halen and richie can't be left out in this row...

My opinion on Eddie and Yngwie are that they came out of nowhere with something new and brilliant but never progressed as years went by.

Versatility wise I think Richie, John Norum, Slash are the among the best out there. But since they have been tremendously successful, they don't get the credit they deserve.

Obviously you have to nod your head to Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Beck for all they did for the guitar.

Clapton is god.

Everybody always seems to forget guys like B.B. King. He needs three notes to make you wanna cry. He doesn't have to hide behind speed picking and two hand tapping. "It's not a matter of who can play the faster notes..." (David Bryan)
