In terms of GREATEST, I'd have thought it would have to go to Hendrix, or Clapton. I don't think there are more reunouned respected guitarests about... maybe Page, but those two for me are the greatest.....

As for best, I'd say by quite a distance it's Steve Vai, I don't think there is anybody who can do the things he can, he's inventive, and does just pull out all the stops.... Plus he still, and has done for the last 20-30 years, been practicing for 10 hours everyday, I don't think there are many people who have that sort of commitement....

IN actual fact, just because of the entertainement level, the spectacular nature, and brilliance of him, he's probably my favourite guitarest as well.... Although the likes of Sambora, Mores, Blackmore, Page, Roth, are still up there.... I also think in terms of rock, he's the one person who is still bringing out cuttng edge rock music.

B.B.King is very good though, and also great. I saw him play a few years ago, and he was just awsom. Nothing spectacular, but the amount of soul in his playing, he made his guitar fill a 20,000 arena, which was in intself a real achievement.

Anybody who's seen Clapton play will know he's not overated, anybody who's heard or seen Cream footage will be now laughing at anybody who thinks he's overrated.... I don't think nowerdays his music is anywhere near as good, but his guitar playing is still increadible.

hendrix of course - but it annoys me that that is such the stereotypical answer...

ok for me:

30s-70s

Chuck Berry
Robert Johnson
Ritchie Blackmore
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck

late 70s onwards

you can't not mention Van Halen... Steve Vai/Satriani and then of course Mark Knoppfler, Gary Moore...

so many

for a long time i wanted to be Satriani - I played Always With Me, Always with you for my GCSE music performance

and Vai : Crying Machine

but now i lend more to Blackmore, Page - i prefer to make music where i am in a sense starting from basics

there are too many 13 year olds trying to be Satch for my liking

yeah your right.......... one thing I've learned over the years is that "speed" doesn't necessarily make you a great guitarist!
