Default Think Van Halen was good? Listen to this!

I've been a fan of Bon Jovi for about 2 years now.. But i've also been a STRONG fan with Dream Theater.

Dream Theater is a Progressive Rock (or Progressive Metal) band; The same genre as "System of a Down". However, DT isn't at all like SOAD. Progressive Rock is rock that has stages of high parts, and low parts. Dream Theater have lots of styles of music they play, playing lots of styles all in one song (alas, Progressive music). They have some VERY nice music; Kinda just touching the border of metal, but not going into it. Their best song was probably "The Glass Prison", which went for about 14 minutes. People say it had probably the best guitar playing ever.. the media didn't, but people who listen to the song do.

John Petrucci is the guitarist for DreamTheater, and i can easily say he's better than Van Halen, Hendrix, Page, Clapton, and Sambora (in fact everyone, i've never heard any better guitarist). The DT Concert-DVD "Live in Budokan" is so brilliant, especially their performance of "Finally Free"; In which they have a "solo fight" against the guitarist, drummer, and keyboardist, who may i say, are all brilliant players.

I really recommend you all to listen to a few of their songs.. These are a few good songs:
The Glass Prison
As I Am
Honor Thy Father
"Lost Without You" (live instrumental)

Their best albums would be "Train of Thought", "Octavurium", and "Six Degrees of Innur Turbulence". I really encourage you guys to check out this band, because they're close to as-good-as-BJ.

Thanks
-Rhys

How could you possibly think that Dream Theater would be something Bon Jovi fans would appreciate? Prog-rock? I find DT boring and repetitive. It's like musical masturbation, "let's see how many parts we can cram into one song".

Blaah. "Progressive" rock sucks.

Shouldn't this be in "other bands"?

I happen to like Dream Theater but I have a son who has loved them for a long time and I have had their music in my house for years. If I hadn't been exposed to it in that manner, however, I doubt it would be something I would have found on my own.

Umm.. Their songs go for around 15 minutes.. Thats so the parts dont sound cramped. If you listen to SOAD, they cramp it big time.

How does having lots of parts make a song repetitive?

Bon Jovi fans might appreciate DT because I appreciate DT.

If you have a song that's 15 minutes long, it has got too many parts.

I didn't mean a song, I meant their songs are all so boring. They all sound alike.

Have to say that the live rendition of 'Hollow Years' off of the Live from Budokan DVD is probably one of my all-time favourite tracks - the guitar solo is simply amazing.

Also gotta love 'Endless Sacrifice' - wish I could sweep pick half as well as Petrucci!

I like the older DT stuff, like Awake and Images & Words. They lost me after Six Degrees. They are brilliant players but I don't like the newer songs.

Speaking of brilliant musicians, check this out:
