I thought Colleges don't offer advanced degrees and don't do research, unlike Universities, but I could be wrong.

I also heard once that Colleges only offer one discipline, while Universities have all sorts of majors. Not sure how true that is either.

Major help, huh?

I'm not sure if its the same system in the States, but in Canada, colleges offer diplomas for their programs. University graduates earn degrees.

However, we have some colleges that are affliated with universities where students earn both a diploma and a degree.

To further complicate the matter, some colleges offer programs such as nursing, where students will earn nursing diplomas, while you can take nursing in university and get a degree for such a discipline.

Here universities offer degrees in lots of subjects. if you go on you can do an honours degree (or masters as some stuck up uni's like to call it) and then Phd's

colleges do higher national certicifcate (1 year) and higher national diploma (2 years) courses in various subjects too and they lead onto 1st or 2nd year degree level.

there was a table out yesterday listing the universities in the UK on the basis of teaching at the institutes. dundee came 1st, glasgow came 8th and strathclyde (mine) came 9th in the whole of the UK which is pretty cool IMO.

How they're basically the same:

* While many factors affect the quality of an institution, the same type of Baccalaureate or Bachelor's degrees can be conferred by both colleges and universities.
* Admission requirements differ according only to selectivity-Highly ranked colleges are often more selective than universities.
* Both colleges and universities can be either privately or publicly operated.
* The phrase "going to college" is used to mean attending any university or college in the U.S.

How they generally differ:

* Colleges tend to be smaller, with smaller class sizes and students receiving more personal attention from faculty.
* Universities offer Masters and Doctorate degrees-requiring completion of the Bachelors degree first.
* Universities tend to be larger, with faculty time and attention divided between research and teaching.
* Some large Universities will have divisions named "The College of Liberal Arts" or the "College of Engineering."
