We're talking about one country. If it is legal for Derek Bliss to have anal sex in one state, why can he get sent to prison for it in another*? The US is more like a collection of countries, than a collection of states.

Yes, but it is a FREE country. Hence the fact each state is able to create their own laws. If all the laws were dictated to us, how is that freedom?
