Absolutely! I've lived in NC since the early 80's. The population in the NC (near larger cities not in the rural areas) has become much more diverse in the last 10 years. I teach elementary school part-time and have seen an increase in Asian and Middle Eastern students (we also have Europeans, Central Americans, etc). Although the population is more diverese, people may know a Muslim, but not understand the customs. They just know what the media has said.
I grew up in Northern Jersey until middle school (early 80's), and still visit family there. I know the there is a much greater amount of foreigners around NYC, but I think many people in the south have met or know a Muslim. IMO some people here are not as accepting as they are in the North because it is still "new "here.

So long as the term hillbillies is in reference to ignorance and not geography in general, as unfortunatley I fall into that geographic category. But I think you will find people who live in the south are open/accepting of other cultures and people who are not. But the same could be said all over the world.
