In normal speech/writing, would you say "the day" instead of "today"? Would you always say it, or just in some cases?

I'm doing my master's thesis on the use of the definite article 'the' in Scots English, and this is excellent research material for me  Most importantly: Do you mind if I quote this above of yours in my thesis? You're giving me strong ground for my research!

In scotland we always 'the day' instead of today. I dont think i have ever used today in normal conversation. E.g. to explain a bad day at work id say "it was a bad day at work the day like" :P
