I have a Sony HDD/DVD recorder, which I love. Very easy to use. Only have a 160GB harddrive though but it's quite enough for me. I transfer my favourite VHS to DVD. I agree, the picture LOOKS better on the transferred material than on the VHS. I still have my videorecorder though and I will keep it until it breaks down I guess.
When it comes to recording shows, some shows show up with the title already there, others I have to name myself, and yes you watch and then delete if you want to.
Make sure you get a HDD/DVD recorder that can manage both +r and -r discs, makes life easier. I use Fiji discs a lot and have never had a problem with those.

Up-conversion or scaling (which is the "normal" term) means that the player can scale the regular PAL (720x576) videos to the HD-ready resolution (1920x1080). Usually the TVs can do this themselves, but a good scaler gives a better image quality. However, I doubt that a DVD/HD-player would have a good scaler unless it's _very_ expensive.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Glad I asked questions, because I had been thinking about just getting a combo vcr/dvd recorder. I didn't know dvds came with harddrives.

Another question: What is the difference between +r and -r discs?

And to record from the vcr, do you just hook up the 2 machines the same as you do when dubbing vhs tapes?

For normal user, there is none. The thing is, some DVD-players/writers only accept one format and can't read or write the other. Modern players/writers usually support both.

Yep, exactly the same! Only trouble is it still detects if you VHS tapes are copy-protected, cause some are.

I only chose a stand-alone DVD/HDD Recorder rather than getting a capture card for my pc cause they are simple to use and you get good results, rather than needing the computer the size of a tank so as to to avoid loss of frames.

If you want fancy menu's though, you won't get them on one of these. But have a DVD+RW drive on your comp, then you can get some good authoring software and properly master your recordings and make them look more professional, but like I said in an earlier post, I couldn't give a shit about menu's, it's what I'm watching that counts.
