wow for the 1st time ever i'm going to go really over a word limit. i'm talking at least a couple of hundred words here and there's no waffling in it so i'm just going to hand it in with a note saying i know it's well over but i didn't want to take anythign out and detract any of my arguments.

it's a beautiful thing when you sit down to an essay or exam and halfway through you think; yup this is going to be great.

you usually get 10% either way on word limits anyway so i wouldn't worry.

let me get back to you on that one. pain in the arse but in west european history we've just done the french and italian systems after the war and we've done them extensively in my european politics class but neither have touched the UK.

a couple of things you really should look into though:

the welfare state coming into existence post war. have a look for the beveridge report. when you look at the dramatic change from people not having any sort of welfare from the state to having the NHS etc is really important and there was really no way we could go back after that.

the fact that churchill was ousted not too long after the war. was he a suitable PM or just a really good war leader?

the beginning of the EU. even though the UK didn't join till the 70s it's important to note that was partly due to them not thinking it would be a success when the EECSC or whatever it was called was set up in the 50s and de gaulle vetoed our entry a couple of times, partly because of that, partly because of personal grudges.

obviously the cold war. britain wanted to be a mediator or referee between the soviets and yanks. in my old history notes ive got a great document of a US secretary of defence around the time of the missile crisis saying how the UK wanted to be this big player but it's time was up.

the fall of the empire too and the effect that had on us...... i mean you could argue that the empire was on it's death knell before the 1st war and that just killed it but the 2nd world war was the undertaker.

i mean as far as i see it, the actual system itself, it didn't change too much especially compared to the rest of europe i mean germany and italy had to come out of totalitarian regimes, france had to enter the 4th republiuc and the UK, politically speaking anyways we remained unscathed with regards to our system but there was a whole lot of change on the continent and the wider world that obviously affected our policies and objectives.

yeah i'll check out all these you mentioned and i think i know where i'm gonna focus (i hope i know ). i was looking for some british books and i found a lot so i don't really know which of them are the best or more appropriate and i'm quite confused.

i've never done anything about the british political system either. i've done about france and the US and germany.

if there's any books talking about the westminster political system type then that'll help you greatly.

it's the same system greece adopts so some of you're own books might be able to help you with the basics.
