What is a rock star?

What exactly is a rock star, because the way I see it, it doesn't mean a rock band, or musician.

You hear a lot of pop bands being refered to as rock stars, simply because they're slighlty famous, and play music.....

The word rock start to me means very little, and has nothing to do with music, or indeed, rock!
