Because you're not meant to be playing live in a TV studio. They're actually really small and with a rock band, it's usually just not possible to play so quietly that the audience could sit in the same room or that the mics could record the sound properly. With lip synching everything's in perfect balance and it's hell of a lot easier to mix. TV studios are not clubs, very few studios can actually have bands playing live.

I read a question on the Bon Jovi Fan Focus that asked if Bon Jovi ever lip synced. The answer was yes, they have, but only when they had to. All of Bon Jovi's SNL performances were live.

exactly... I never said they did it all the time. there are people who do it all the time and people who do it when encesarry.

as ice said, tv studios are incredibly small when compared to how big they look. even a coupla marshall half stacks and a live drum kit are goign to sound bollocks in most situations unless you spend a good few hours with the sound guys tweaking it so sometimes turning up with dummy loads and firing the song through the PA is a godsend.
