What does a nationality mean if there's nothing you can connect with it?

Ps thx Jayster. You brought up great arguments.

What does proclaiming you are Irish mean if you live in Los Angeles, have never been to Ireland and never participated in Irish traditions (and probably don't even know them)?

I could be wrong but I always thought that you know the traditions of a country if you know that's where you (or your family) come from.

My dads parents are both Polish. He was born in England. He is English, I am English. I don't know any Polish traditions, neither does he.

I think that this whole post started because someone has been watching Gangs of New York.

Poor guy. I only met people who know about the traditions of the country they come from. But now I start to understand why you post such messages.

I think that the reason why the Americans claim what they are not is because they want to seem cultured and intelligent, when the truth is they have never left their own country.

I saw that film a long time ago (well, December) and it never crossed my mind when I created this post. It was a comment in the 'is Jon gay' thread which caused me to write this.
