Sorry to interrupt your conversation but I gotta say something about the anti-America thing. I one thing I agree with krb (even if I would never have thought that): "Patriotic nonsense"

But that's just one thing about a lot (not all) Americans that I absolutely can't stand. But does that mean that I hate all Americans? Sure, I can't stand its policy but most people don't have a say in what Bush & Co. do.

(btw krb: did you notice that you first said that Americans want to identify with the country of their ancients and later you said that about the patriotic nonsense?)

Excellent point. This backs up my theory that they only say that they are Irish, English or whatever to seem more intelligent/well travelled/cultured, and they say it when it suits them. They can't wait to wave their flags and sing their anthem, and proclaim to ba a 'proud American'.

(And for those who started their own conversation on this thread, check out my other post in this forum.)

I do believe you've captured the spirit. I know people form the States and not all are nearly as patriotic as they seem, but most of them think USA is the best place there is. They ignore all the problems, all the wars etc.

Americans seem to want to rule the world and in order to do so, they say what ever suits the moment. They don't necessarely even know what they mean, it's all just small talk. "Yeah, I'm Swedish.", not even knowing where the country is. If you're Irish, they're Irish. If you like hocky, they like hockey. It's all just a big game of pretending, like their optimism and smile.

What difference does it make if someone is proud of their heritage?? I'm Dutch-Irish and born in England but I now live in The Netherlands.. does this make me English just cause I was born there? Or does it make me Dutch because I have a Dutch passport and I live in Holland? You are what you are. I am proud of my Irish heritage just as I am of my Dutch heritage. I don't believe that because you've never been to a country that you can't say that that is where your heritage lies and be proud of that. It is also a strange assumption to say that the country that you're born in, is your nationality.. I guess therefore it is right to assume that Elizabeth Taylor is indeed English because she was born there, although both her parents were American and she has lived nearly all of her life in the USA. Like my mother always says: "Even if you are born in a stable, that doesn't make you a horse."
