It's a good way of building national pride, and I don't think my views are far from the truth.
If you go to New York City, you will see signs proclaiming it as the capital of the world. If you go to the Empire State Building it says it is the capital of the capital of the world. What a joke eh? There is no other place that is as overrated as New York. I lived in normal 'York' in England and that is a far more interesting place to visit, even after living there for four years.
I lived in NY. I must have missed all of these "signs."
I was a tourist, you were a resident. It would've seemed normal to you, being raised in the greatest country in the world, so you probably wouldn't have noticed them. I remember three seperate occasions where I saw something that proclaimed that NY was the capital of the world, and I only stayed there for two long days.

Hey, if you say so. I only lived there a short while myself, but I can't recall what the heck you are talking about. Besides, I thought NJ was the capital of the world? :P I was born and raised in Jersey so I guess I am a bit partial to it. Although NY does have much better food and drivers. Mmmm....am I changing the subject. Shame on me.

The next time you are in New York, go to the empire state building. Look on the wall as you are standing in the queue (which you yanks prefer to call line-ups) to the ticket booth, you will see it will say 'Welcome to the capital of the capital of the world', or something along those lines.

Sad, eh?
Because whether we like it or not, we are slowly being Americanized. We get all their TV shows, books, magazines, music, etc. And their big stores (i.e. Walmart) are coming up here and putting our smaller ones out of business. Our oil companies are being bought up. Even our shoreline properties are being bought up by Americans. Their dollar is worth so much more than ours that it's a bargain to buy anything up here! And now since 9-11, and the initial INCORRECT reports the hi-jackers entered the USA from Canada, the American government is trying to tell us how to run our own homeland security!

The joke is that we will be the first country taken over by another without a shot ever being fired. So, whenever we have the chance we boast that we are not Americans, just in a desperate attempt to cling onto our own nationality.

There was even a beer ad based on our differences. You can watch it if you'd like, here: http://home7.swipnet.se/~w-72891/Can...Csales/ad.html

Yeah - but I listen to Trent FM every morning & it is always claiming Nottingham is the Greatest City in the World.

Of course - this time, they got it right

I would be more likely to say that I am proud to live in a country that has tap water you can drink, good education, lovely scenery, not over-populated, a good healthcare system, and people don't run around shooting each other. I mean, these things do happen here, but I don't live in fear. Our government makes more of an effort to take care of our people. I feel lucky to be born here. Very lucky. Much of Canada's culture is based on the US way of life as well, and I can't imagine our lives any different. I am guilty of thinking some Americans to be ignorant at times, but there are Canadians who are too. I have watched one too many episodes of Jay Leno's "Jaywalkers".

The media obviously calls America the greatest country in the world. I don't think it is and I'm American. The arrogancy thing is a media thing as well. Are you friends with any Americans? Are your American friends arrogant? I don't walk around chanting "USA USA" neither does anyone I know. We are too busy trying to make a living and pay our bills just like everyone else around the world is doing. America used to be called "the melting pot" of the world because of all the different nationalities and religions living together in one country. But other countries are like that too. I just get offended because I, as well as my friends and family, have never forgotten where our ancestors came from. Actually, I brag because I am of Italian and German descent, not because I am American! So remember, you can blame your relatives or ancestors or countrymen for coming over to this country and making it what it is today!!!!!!!!

If Derek 'gay lover beater' Bliss is reading this, here is my point about what was discussed in the 'Why do Americans...' thread. Americans say that they are Italian, or Irish or whatever because it makes them seem more sophisticated.

You are American. You aren't Italian or German.
