people get married for different reasons,

to not be lonely,

to share life with someone,

to have something to be committed to .

to be needed.

because they found their soul mate, life partner.

Havent found mine + I dont get lonely , so its the single life for me adn right now I LOVE IT

I believe kids only care if we adults tell them to. I have friends that are married but both kept their name - the kids name is the same as the fathers name. They are married - but the kids still don't have the same name as the Mom. I doubt they'll ever care.

As far as taxes, you certainly don't get married for tax reasons in the US. It may work well if only one works, but if both work you're better off seperate. Hence the term marriage penalty. (of course this is an evil plan by the republican party to keep women at home and not at work - j/p/k :P )
Well my daughter is too young but i'm not lying my son find this situation a bit strange as other kids i know, i have several friends who are in the same situation and i know their kids feel the same ....
And maybe not in the US but here yes, you get married for reduce your tax. No matter if one is working or two, it's better to be married.
