So because Britain is not in a feverish patriotic pitch, you think that because we are, we are carrying it a bit too far? No, you're right. I don't see your point.

No comment on Nazis.

So do you respect your flag, or do you only salute it because you have to?

Well, it fits right in since we are a patriotic country. While most of you think of "patriotism" as a dirty word, in America we are proud of it. To each his own.
hence my previous posts, here patriotism is not thought of as a dirty word (apart from by those crazy muslim clerics trying to incite hatred) its just not as prominent

and do I respect my flag? The Union Jack represents my country so in that respect yes, however it is just a flag. Those people in America that want to make burning flags illegal is just silly, surely you dont need an image of your country to be proud of it?

Waving to you from Kensington Palace? Or how about Balmoral? Why is your national anthem an ode to one person? "God Save the Queen"? What happens when she dies? Does it get changed to "God Save the King" when Charles takes her place?
Actually that is the way it works, when 'Lizzy had her husband, it was God Save the King. In a way your sarcasm has hit a correct spot, or at least u have asked the tight person.

Not me!

I think it's just the two different attitudes, different ways' of seeing things. Britain wasn't patriotic because it was new, it was very patriotic in the 1800's when Britain had the biggest empire, and was the most powerful country. America are now the most powerful country, so it follows that it's people will be patriotic, and will be proud of being part of the most powerful country in the world.

People are generally patriotic when they're at the top, or bottom. With Britian hanging in this sort of middle ground, where we don't have that much influence, and are only one of the big powers because we cling onto America's traliling leg, so we have nothing to sing about. Plus, I think a lot of people in England are quite ashamed of out old empire, and the Boer war in particular, so we're don't usually sing about this as much.

Plus, we have a media that slaggs of the country no end. If one of our sportsmen has a bad game, they're ripped to shreads on the backpages, if they're successful it's not reported as a big deal. Same with polititions, they're always quick to critisise, but the things they do right go a little unnoticed. It's the other way around in America. I remember during the Olypics, they were using an 'alternate' medels table so they were at the top!!!!!!! They want success, they want to be proud, we don't.

An English man is never more happy than when he's going something to complain about!

I don't know if you all understand the way Presidential elections work here. You may have the popular vote, but if you don't have the electoral votes you won't be elected President. For example: I'll use Texas as an example. They have a lot of electoral votes, around 30 or so. A state like Arkansas has a small amount of electoral votes, about 6. Say Gore won the popular vote in Arkansas, but lost it in Texas. Gore would actually have 6 votes and Bush 30. The electoral votes generally go in favor of the popular vote in each state....you can win alot of states with a small number of electoral votes, but if you don't carry any states with a large number of electoral votes you will lose the election. That's what happened in the 2000 election, only the 2nd time in our history. The popular vote does not guarantee the Presidency.
