We read a book on that last year in Women's Studies called Schoolgirls. It basically dealt with the "hidden curriculum" which explains the steep decline in confidence as girls reach adolescence. Personally, I never had this experience. The only time I struggled in math was OAC calculus. It had nothing to do with the fact that there were guys in my class. In fact the guys seemed to be having just as much trouble with the class.
As for giving black children their own schools, there was talk to trying to implement it in the Greater Toronto Area. Ultimately it was shot down because it was seen as racist. But advocates for the program cited the lack of positive male black role models for children.
