I actually once heard that Finland (or Scandinavia as a whole) is one of the very few countries (areas) that have the similar kind of liquorice as we have over here. Which is salt (terribly salt in some cases), not sweet... and foreign people hate it... it's always fun to offer non-Dutch people some real Dutch liquorice, the way their faces change because of the taste
Yes, I think we have the same thing. Liquorice is salty, not sweet. And salmiac too, I think. But we get salmiac in all shapes and forms - powder, soft, hard, we even have salmiac flavoured vodka!
cool
Liquorice & salmiac are completely different... where liquorice is made of liquorice roots (which you can actually buy as roots in sweet stores over here as well :P), is salmiac a salt formed out of ammonia and hydrochloric acid (ammoniumchloride)... and I bet no one who has never had it, will ever think of taking it anyway!

WOW! Some nationalism is in the air.. Have to say one thing, though,

No they aren't, AT ALL!!! They're the same colour, but other than that, they're not the same thing!

Salmiakki is actually white..

!

We made some pure ammoniumchloride in chemistry class (like almost everybody in Finland will do in some point) and man it was good!! Yumm!! You don't want to eat too much of pure salmiac though, as it is, like written before, acid, and therefore will poison you... hmm... :P

Isn't salmiakki= salt liqourice??

THere's also one strange thing in foreigners who have tasted the infamous Salmiakkikossu. They think they have drunk poison, which is so very untrue... it's more like...nectar!!! Yup, that's what it is! And in Next sunday, the whole country will watch ice-hockey, eat Supersalmiakki with rye bread and drink Salmiakkikoskenkorva! After all this, they chew Jenkki (Yankee) Xylitol.

In the morning, it's recommeded that you avoid finn's company (unless they have brushed their teeth with tootpaste, of which most contain - xylitol!).

Man I'm rambling...!
