You're right Mouse - I remember reading about that. What happened? I remember some political types thinking people would be running from New Jersey so the idea was killed. I have no clue if that's what really happened.

Finland's real national anthem is of course Maamme, "Our Land". But what would be our unofficial national anthems? Here are some of my suggestions...

Finlandia, by Jean Sibelius
Murheellisten Laulujen Maa, by Eppu Normaali (Finnish rock)
Joutsenlaulu, by Yö (Finnish rock)
Autiotalo, by Dingo (Finnish rock)
Surupuku, by Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus (Finnish metal)
Sinä Lähdit Pois, by Ultra Bra (Finnish, erm, pop rock perhaps)
Mikan Faijan BMW, by Anssi Kela (Finnish singer-songwriter stuff)
Paratiisi, by Rauli Badding Somerjoki (Finnish adult oriented pop)
Viimeinen, by Nylon Beat (Finnish pop)
Join Me, by HIM
Freestyler, by Bomfunk MC's
Sandstorm, by Darude

Bubblin' Under:
Pikkukakkosen Posti (a jingle for the postal addy of a kid's TV show)
Puuhamaa, by Mikko Alatalo (a TV ad jingle)
Satumaa, by Unto Mononen (probably Finland's most popular tango)
Mä Näitä Polkuja Tallaan, by Matti & Teppo (Finnish schlager at its, erm, "best")

Hey, that's a good one! I mean, great song to go with some meaning as to why it's so popular.

Yeah, like these are the types of songs that if they are played in a pub, EVERYBODY knows and sings.

The moment I saw the topic, two rock songs came to my mind that are truly the anthems of Finnish rock

By far, these two are the ones I would go for. For me, they marked the beginning of Finnish rock at its very best, both songs are from early 80s.

(a note here is in order tho, especially for Anu. And I think Masa will come and have a go at me for saying that above... Cause I know absolutely nothing about the Finnish contemporary rock scene... The other day Masa was talking about Tehosekoitin and that they are actually quite good. I said I don't really go for that myself, but I think their drummer Sipe is one of the best drummers in Finland. Masa said very dryly "umm... he is great, and plays for Apulanta". I was not defeated by this setback at all, but continued: "yeah, but in Ankkarock 2000 I was priviledged enough to witness the last time ever Jimi Pääkallo played with Tehosekoitin." Masa says... "umm... I'm sure it was great, but it was with Tyrävyö he played" So from now on, I don't even claim to know anything about Finnish rock. But I do know and love my Dingo and Yö )

This one I wouldn't have thought about myself, but absolutely has to be mentioned:

Satumaa, by Unto Mononen (probably Finland's most popular tango)
This is what traditional Finland is all about!

OMG Anu... how true:

Ok, not rock anthems but for someone to claim to be familiar with the anthems of Finnish music, there are have-tos. HIH!!!

As for the others, IMO they are too new to be considered anthems, only time will tell if they actually will become that. Except for Paratiisi, but I wouldn't say it's an anthem. Represents that genre at its best but is not an anthem for me.
