Default Iggy Pop says Joey Ramone died because of...

Watched a rock documentary last night on this German/French ARTE channel. Was pretty much about the impact of punk music on the world. And Iggy Pop said there that Joey Ramone suffered a lot because of the existence of bands such as Green Day and Offspring, destroying the image and the meaning of punk, and basically giving American Punk a bad name. Iggy thought this eventually contributed to his death.

I just thought it was interesting and wanted to share. Iggy Pop himself said he can't stand those bands, but can't be bothered much anyhow. What do you guys think? How strong can one identify with a musical genre or direction? Or was Iggy Pop just talking crap?

Just wondering...

Well if it was that much of a hatred it probably didn't help him with his lymphoma.

He didn't die because of that but cancers have it even easier when their victims are not in a positive state of mind.

Of course that was not the direct cause although they say that stress is the toughest disease out there. However, the point was more about what sort of things can affect someone, especially somebody who actually is a legend. It sounded to me a bit like a king who lost his country and now it's ruled by some barbarians. I guess that happened to a lot of kings who had to abdicate. I probably got to metaphorical but then again, I thought that Joey Ramone's attitude, if corresponding to reality, was admirable and we'd be listening to better music if more of the great artists out there, had a similarly consequent opinion.

May also well be that I am just overinterpreting the whole thing.

the first may be true, got no clue. The Ramones you may like or dislike, but calling them "pish" whatever you may mean by that, is being just as ignorant as the guys who called Bruce Springsteen whatever in the previous posts.

I happen to be a great fan of the Ramones, although I think that their music is only partially punk. Lot of it I'd call Glam actually.

i cant remember exactly who it was but there was a radio interview with a guy a while back, in fact it might have been mark lemar and he pointed out that considering the amount of hype and legend the ramones have, their tunes were very juvenile and many were cringeworthy....

i have to agree.

I don't put much stock into genre's of music honestly.
I just listen to what I like, no matter what people classify it as.
As far as what Iggy said, I would think he's being metaphoric, and I'e never heard anything like that in any of the Ramones Docus I've seen. (BTW, check out "End Of The Century")
The Ramones music does get somewhat repetitive, but I enjoy it. There's a lot of great melody buried in there, and while Joey is not an amazing lyricist, he can certainly write an entertaining rock song.

i have to agree.
I don't remember who it was, I think Bono, the guy with the sunglasses who plays in some Irish band, said "New York gave the world many great things. But certainly, the greates thing it gave us was THE RAMONES"

i don't have to agree with that, but this time i will, for the sake of the conversation.
